I keep hearing about AI in apps, search, and recommendations, but I still don’t really understand what’s going on under the hood. I’ve read articles and watched a few videos, but they either go too technical or stay super vague. Could someone break down how AI really works in practice, how it learns from data, and why it sometimes makes mistakes, in a way a non-expert can follow?
Think of AI as a stack of three things: data, patterns, and decisions.

Apps feed AI a ton of examples.
Photos, text, clicks, likes, watch time, voice, location, etc.
For a modern model you often see millions or billions of examples. -
Patterns
The core tool is a “neural network”.
Despite the name, it is just a big math function with a lot of numbers in it, called weights.
Training means:
- Show input, like “this is a cat picture”
- The model guesses the label
- Compare guess vs truth
- Adjust weights using an algorithm called gradient descent
Do this again and again on huge datasets.
Over time the model starts to map inputs to outputs in useful ways.
No magic. It is optimization.

Once trained, you use the model in three main ways:
Search
- You type a query
- System turns words into numbers (embeddings)
- It compares your vector to document vectors
- It ranks results by similarity plus other signals, like clicks and recency
Recommendations
- You scroll TikTok or YouTube
- System tracks watch time, likes, skips, replays
- It builds a profile of “you liked stuff with these patterns”
- It scores each candidate video for “how likely you watch”
- It shows the top scoring ones, then repeats after each action
Apps and assistants
- For text, models like GPT or Claude are “large language models”
- They predict the next word based on the previous words
- Training data is large text corpora from the web, books, code
- During use, they do next word prediction over and over, which forms sentences
Why it feels spooky
- Scale: billions of parameters, billions of examples
- Speed: all the math runs fast on GPUs
- Feedback loops: your behavior trains the next version
What you should watch for in real life
- Bias: model output reflects its data
- Overconfidence: models sound sure even when wrong
- Data privacy: your usage logs often feed analytics or training
How to “get” it fast by playing with it
- Use a text model like ChatGPT or Claude, try the same question in different ways
- Use a recommendation app, like YouTube, then aggressively click and watch only one topic, like cooking, and see how the feed flips
- Use Google Lens or any photo recognition app to see how it labels objects
If you want to go one tiny step deeper without math:
Search “neural network as function approximation” and “gradient descent explained without calculus”.
Those two ideas give you most of what is going on under the hood without needing to code.

1. Compression: squashing the world into numbers
AI doesn’t “understand” your cat photo or your question like a human. It:

- Learns a compact way to represent them so similar things end up with similar numbers.
- This compressed space is where the “magic” happens.

I slightly disagree with the typical “it’s just pattern matching” explanation. It is pattern matching, but at huge scale and in a space humans can’t visualize. That’s why it feels like understanding.

- Large language models: most likely next word.

That’s why it can be confidently wrong. It’s not checking reality; it’s checking plausibility.
3. Control: nudging your behavior
This part people underplay.
Once you can predict “you’ll probably click this,” you can also:
- Steer what you see
- Keep you scrolling
- Push some content more than others
So AI is not just:
“User asked → model answered.”
It’s also:
“User acted → model predicts how to keep user engaged → app updates what user sees.”
That feedback loop is why feeds get so weird if you only click one kind of thing for a day. You are training a tiny slice of the system in real time.
4. How this shows up in search, recs, and apps
Search
- Old way: keywords, links, PageRank.
- New way: your query → numbers → compared to doc numbers → ranked.
- Extra spice: personalization, your location, what people like you clicked.
So when search feels “creepy-smart,” it’s not that it “knows you deeply,” it just has a brutal amount of stats about what tends to work for people with similar behavior.
Recommendations
- Track what you watch, skip, rewatch, mute, scroll past.
- Build a vector that roughly says: “this person is 0.83 into gaming, 0.65 into cooking, 0.17 into politics, etc.”
- Every possible video gets a score like “probability you’ll watch 30+ seconds.”
- Top scores win your screen.
You’re not seeing “the best” content. You’re seeing “the most likely to keep you there.” Subtle but important difference.
Apps / assistants (like this thing)
- The model sees previous words and predicts the next.
- Guardrails, instructions, and some extra logic push it away from pure prediction into “useful” answers.
- Underneath, still just math cranking through: “given this context, what word fits?”
5. What’s actually worth remembering
No need to learn gradients or matrices unless you want to. If you want a mental model that’s “not too mathy, not too fluffy,” I’d keep these in mind:
- AI = massive statistics plus clever compression
- It predicts; it does not reason like a human
- It optimizes for some goal: accuracy, clicks, watch time, etc.
- Whatever goal you pick will shape behavior, often in slightly cursed ways
And honestly, the quickest way to feel how it works:
- Brutally game your YouTube / TikTok for one niche and watch the feed mutate.
- Ask a language model the same question 5 different ways and see how wording changes answers.
- Take a photo and watch how consistently apps label stuff right and occasionally hilariously wrong.
If you can remember “it’s probability engines everywhere, trying to guess what comes next and subtly steering what I see,” you basically get what’s happening under the hood, without swimming in equations.
Strip it down and think of AI less as “brains” and more as huge habits in code.

1. What AI really optimizes for (and why it matters more than the math)
Forget neurons and gradient descent for a second. The crucial question is:
“What is the system being rewarded for doing?”
Examples:
- Search: rewarded when you click, stay, maybe don’t bounce back instantly.
- Recommendations: rewarded when you keep watching, scrolling, or buying.
- Assistants: rewarded (during training) when humans say “this answer looks good.”
Everything else is details.
If the goal is watch time, you get sticky feeds.
If the goal is sales, you get upsells.
If the goal is looking smart, you get confident nonsense.
This is where I slightly disagree with the “giant autocomplete engine glued into everything” picture. It is autocomplete, but tuned and wrapped by people with business goals, which changes how it behaves in practice.
2. Why it feels like “understanding” when it is mostly “habit replay”
Modern AI is extremely good at:
- Noticing tiny statistical regularities in massive data
- Replaying those regularities in new situations
That combo looks like understanding, but is closer to:
- “I’ve seen 100 million posts that look like this, and they usually end with a joke, so here’s a joke.”
Inside, there is no “I know what a joke is.”
It is stacked habits that happen to line up with your expectations most of the time.
So when a model in a shopping app “knows” you want hiking boots after you just looked at camping stoves, it is not psychoanalyzing you. It is following “people who did X often then did Y” at scale.
3. Where I differ a bit from the compression / prediction framing
Compression and prediction are great mental models, but they can hide two awkward realities:

Garbage in, structured garbage out
If the data reflects social biases, manipulation, spam, or trends, the model will quietly bake those into its habits. It is not neutral statistics. It is history, frozen. -
Interface makes it feel smarter than it is
Nicely phrased text, clean UI, and “top 10 best” labels give outputs a kind of fake authority. The same prediction engine, shown as raw probabilities, would feel way dumber.

Notice how fast your feed shifts when you “play dumb”: click only one weird niche for an evening and watch everything else vanish. That is the goal function showing its hand. -
Assistants / chatbots:
When the answer sounds slick, ask: “If this were just a probability guess, what could it be missing?” You will instantly be less impressed and more accurate about what it can and can’t do.
5. Quick mental checklist for “what is this AI doing to me?”
You can carry this around without any math:
- What is this system trying to maximize?
- Who picked that goal?
- What data did it learn from, and what baggage comes with that?
- How often do I get to correct it, and does it actually listen?
