How do I turn off Vanish Mode on Instagram DMs?

I accidentally turned on Vanish Mode in one of my Instagram chats and now messages keep disappearing. I can’t figure out how to switch it back to normal so the messages stay in the conversation. Can someone walk me through the exact steps to disable Vanish Mode on Instagram DMs on both iPhone and Android?

Happens a lot, Vanish Mode is way too easy to trigger.

Here is how you turn it off on Instagram DMs:

On iPhone or Android app:

  1. Open Instagram.
  2. Go to your DMs.
  3. Open the chat that has Vanish Mode on.
  4. If the background is dark and says something about Vanish Mode, do this:
    • Put your finger at the bottom of the screen.
    • Swipe up like you are pulling the chat up.
    • Let go.
  5. You should see the screen switch back to normal, light background.
  6. At the top it should say Vanish Mode off.

Alternative way in some versions:

  1. Open the same chat.
  2. Tap the person’s name at the top.
  3. Look for Vanish Mode in the options.
  4. Toggle it off.

Some extra notes:

  • Once you turn it off, new messages in that chat stay.
  • Messages that already disappeared in Vanish Mode are gone, you do not get them back.
  • If swiping up does nothing, try updating the Instagram app, then force close and reopen it.
  • If your chat looks normal but messages still disappear, you might still be in Vanish Mode in a different thread with the same person. Check if there are two chats with that user and repeat the steps.

Happened to me after I swiped up by mistake while scrolling. Took me like 10 minutes to figure out it was the swipe and not some “bug”.

Honestly, Instagram made Vanish Mode way more confusing than it needs to be.

@chasseurdetoiles covered the main “swipe up” way already, so here are a few other things to check / try that people usually miss:

  1. Confirm Vanish Mode is actually on in that exact thread

    • Open the chat.
    • If you don’t see a dark background with “Vanish mode” text, you might be mixing it up with:
      • Disappearing photos/videos (those still vanish even when Vanish Mode is off)
      • Auto-deleting messages you sent as “View once” or “Allow replay.”
    • In those cases, turning off Vanish Mode won’t change anything because it’s a different feature.
  2. Check if it’s a cross‑app (Messenger) chat
For Instagram chats that are connected with Facebook Messenger, Vanish Mode can behave slightly weird:

    • Sometimes only one side shows the “Vanish mode on” banner clearly.
    • Ask the other person to also swipe up on their side or toggle Vanish Mode off in their options.
If either side keeps Vanish Mode on, messages can still behave oddly.
  3. Look for a second thread with the same person
I slightly disagree with @chasseurdetoiles on the “different thread” point: it’s not super common, but it does happen, especially if one chat started as a “message request” and another as a normal DM.

    • Search the person’s name in your DMs.
    • Open each conversation and see which one has the Vanish Mode label.
    • Turn it off only in the one that actually says Vanish Mode is active.
  4. Clear app cache / re‑login instead of just updating
If swiping up and the toggle both fail:

    • On Android: Settings → Apps → Instagram → Storage → Clear cache (do not clear data unless you know your password).
    • On iPhone:
      • Try logging out and back in.
      • If it’s still bugged, offload/reinstall the app.
Glitchy Vanish Mode is usually a client-side bug, not your account being cursed.
  5. Check if only specific messages “disappear”
If regular text messages stay, but only certain ones vanish, you’re probably seeing:

    • Disappearing photos/videos sent as “View once”
    • Messages that the other person unsent
Vanish Mode off or on will not recover or stop those from vanishing.
  6. What you cannot fix

    • Anything that already vanished in Vanish Mode is gone for good. There’s no “history” hidden somewhere to restore.
    • Screenshots won’t bring them back either, obv. Next time, turn Vanish Mode off before sending anything you want to keep.

So to recap:

  • Make sure you are in the right thread.
  • Verify it’s actually Vanish Mode and not disappearing media.
  • If the visual toggle/swipe doesn’t respond, clear cache or reinstall and re‑login.

IG really needs a “You just turned on Vanish Mode, are you sure?” popup instead of letting a random swipe nuke people’s chats.

Couple of extra angles that might help, especially if what @suenodelbosque and @chasseurdetoiles suggested still leaves things acting weird:

  1. Double‑check your update status vs features
Sometimes Vanish Mode behavior lags behind the visual UI. Even if you updated Instagram, the chat infrastructure on your account might not have caught up:

    • Wait a few minutes after updating, then fully close the app from recent apps and reopen.
    • Test Vanish Mode in a different chat: turn it on there on purpose, then turn it off again. If that new chat behaves correctly, go back to your original thread and try again.
I’ve seen cases where “retraining” the app with a fresh chat made the old glitchy thread behave.
  2. Archive / unarchive or mute / unmute the thread
It sounds dumb, but lightly “resetting” the thread’s state can clear UI bugs:

    • Mute the conversation, back out to your DM list, then open it again and unmute.
    • If you use the archive feature, archive the chat, then restore it.
This does not turn Vanish Mode off by itself, but can make the swipe or toggle finally show up when it was invisible before.
  3. Try from a different device or platform
This is where I slightly disagree with the idea that it is always client‑side on your main phone: sometimes it is tied to the specific app build.

    • Log in on another phone or a tablet and open the same chat.
    • If that device shows the Vanish Mode banner, turn it off there.
    • Then reopen on your main phone.
Web version currently has limited Vanish Mode control, but it still helps confirm whether the chat is in normal mode or not.
  4. Look at notification behavior as a clue
If you are not sure whether Vanish Mode is still active:

    • Send yourself a test message from another account if you have one.
    • When Vanish Mode is on, notifications often show a more generic preview and then the message disappears after opening the chat.
If notifications look normal and the message stays after you open the chat, you are probably out of Vanish Mode and dealing with disappearing media or unsent messages instead.
  5. Last‑resort reset of all chat settings
Instead of just clearing cache or reinstalling, you can try a broader cleanup:

    • Log out of Instagram on all devices.
    • Reinstall Instagram on your main device.
    • Log back in and do not restore from any system backup that might carry over corrupted app data.
This is annoying but often fixes bizarre Vanish Mode ghosts that neither the swipe nor the toggle can touch.

On the “product” side, if you keep getting confused by disappearing stuff, treating Vanish Mode like its own separate feature helps your brain file it correctly: it has pros like privacy for sensitive chats and a cleaner history, and cons like losing context, accidental activation and zero way to restore vanished messages. Compared to how @suenodelbosque breaks down the troubleshooting paths and how @chasseurdetoiles focuses on the quick swipe solution, this approach is more about sanity‑checking your specific chat, your device and your app state so you are not chasing the wrong problem.
